Chicago: Government Documents

The examples found in the Chicago section are based on the style guide The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed., 2017.

Government documents come in various forms and are not always straightforward to cite. The Chicago style does not provide guidelines for all types. We suggest the following.

Footnote format

1. Author, Title (Report number or other identifying information), (Place: Publisher, Date), Page number(s).

Bibliography format

Author Last Name, First Name. Title (Report number or other identifying information). Place of publication: Publisher, Date.

Format

  • Include the short title of the statute (usually found in the first section of the act), statute volume, year, chapter number and section number (if needed).
  • Federal and provincial governments publish annual statute volumes (SC = Statutes of Canada) and periodically revised statute volumes (RSC = Revised Statutes of Canada).
  • If accessed online, include the access date and URL.
  • Statutes usually appear only in the notes and not the bibliography.
